The Fascinating History of Martorana Fruit: Martorana fruit has ancient roots,

dating back to the medieval period in Sicily. Legend has it that the monks of the Martorana Abbey created these almond-based sweets to decorate altars and sacred representations during the holidays. The oldest and most famous preparation made with this paste is the Martorana fruit which was packaged by the nuns in the convent attached to the church of Santa Maria dell'Ammiraglio, or San Nicolò dei Greci, (known as the Martorana), which overlooks Piazza Bellini and was built in 1143 by Giorgio d'Antiochia, admiral of the Norman Roger II, king of Sicily. Later in 1193 it was the noblewoman Eloisia Martorana who had a Benedictine monastery built next to the church and the convent. Since then the entire building complex took the name "della Martorana" in her honor, and the sweets prepared by the nuns were also called in the same way. Tradition says that the convent garden and the vegetable garden were among the most beautiful in the city, where fruit trees and vegetables grew which made the nuns who took care of them proud. Their boast, however, reached the ears of the bishop of that time, who, out of curiosity, wanted to personally go and check it out. However, the visit was made in the middle of autumn, for the feast of All Saints, when the trees were already devoid of any fruit. The nuns then decided to create fruits with almond paste to decorate the trees and thus beautify the garden. Today, it has become a symbol of Sicilian pastry making and a delight known in the whole world.

The Artisan Preparation: Martorana fruit requires skill and dedication. The almonds are processed into a paste, shaped to take the shape of fruit, and then colored with natural pigments. This artisanal technique is passed down from generation to generation, preserving its authenticity and unique flavour.
